Frequently Asked Questions!

There are so many pet care businesses in New York City, what sets you apart from the others?

First, our staff are true animal lovers.  We have extensive experience working with and around animals of all kinds.  Also, we are professionals with an education in animal behaviourism.  We provide the highest level of care and service to you and your pet.  We know that it can be stressful to leave the care of your beloved pet in the hands of a stranger and so we make every effort to make the process of scheduling a sitter or walker easy, comfortably, and reassuring.  We tailor our care according to your preferences and your pet's needs.

Will my dog receive individualized attention during walks?

Yes, we only do individual walks.  The most amount of dogs one walker will have is two to three when the owners ask us to for socialization purposes, or if you have more than one dog.

What areas of New York City do you service?

We walk in all of Manhattan, Long Island City, Astoria, and the below neighborhoods in Brooklyn:

How long have you been in business?

We have been in business since 2013; however, we also worked with The Las Vegas Pet Nanny prior to that.

What are Manhattan Pet Service’s business hours?

The Manhattan Pet Service office is open from 9am-5pm Monday-Friday, excluding national holidays. While MPS offers walks 7 days a week from 6am-11pm, all walks must be scheduled during our office hours (Or online). Do note, that for additional walks, we're going to need 5 business hours advance notice in order to guarantee that we'll be able to find a dog walker who can do the walk in time.

What do you do with the keys I provide you?

We request two copies of your key.  One for the walker assigned to you and one to keep on file in our main office in case your regular walker is unavailable for their normal route.  The keys are assigned a number - that is in no way associated with your name or location, to ensure the confidentiality of your key if ever lost - and kept in a secure lock box.  If you are only requesting temporary pet sitting services, your keys can be returned to you upon the end of your service or we can keep them on file for the next time you may need us.  We will return your keys to you at any time that you request them.

Why is it necessary to set up a meet-and-greet before you begin caring for my pet?

We want our dog walkers and pet sitters to have the best relationship with your pets as possible, and that starts at the meet-and-greet.  Pets often gauge their reactions to new people based off of their owner's, so it is always best to have the first meeting between pet sitter/walker and pet with the owner there.  While conducting the meet-and-greet we are also able to learn how you care for your pet(s) and how we can best emulate that to ensure the comfort and best care of your pet.  Meet-and-greets also allow you to get to know us and leave you feeling relaxed that your pet is in the hands of someone who is professional, caring, and knowledgeable.

How will I know how my pets are doing when I'm away from home?

Our GPS Tracking App allows you to track your dog’s walks in real time, receive SMS and picture messages, and confirmations on your dog’s walks. Click here to see how the app works!

What if I run across an emergency outside of your regular business hours and need help at the last minute?

We will try our absolute best to accommodate last minute requests, but, unfortunately, we can't guarantee that we'll be able to help.

Who are the pet sitters who will be coming into my home?

We hire only true animal lovers who, through an indepth interview, criminal background check, and extensive training process, have been deemed the most passionate, caring, and professional walkers and sitters.

What if my property or pet is damaged?

Manhattan Pet Service is liable only for damage from negligence or willful misconduct.  Due to the unpredictability of animals, we cannot accept responsibility for uncontrollable mishaps - such as bites or furniture damage.

May I tip my pet sitter?

Most definitely!  Tips are never expected, but always appreciated!

Will I have the same dog walker or pet sitter on each visit? What if the pet sitter I used the last time is not available the next time I go away?

At Manhattan Pet Service we understand the importance of keeping the same pet sitter and dog walker with your pet throughout the course of your services with us.  We also know that, at times, emergency situations arise as well as family trips, vacations, etc. This is why we assign two pet sitters to each client.  In your initial meet-and-greet you will meet those two pet sitters/walkers. One will be your primary while the other will be a backup when they are needed.  This will guarantee that your pet has met the people who will be in charge of their care.  Sometimes events occur that are out of our hands, and therefore we cannot guarantee that your walker/sitter will always be with us or available, but with enough notice, we can set up a meeting between your pet and new pet walker/sitter before they take over your pet’s care.

What if the pet walker/sitter has an emergency and can't come care for my pet?

We ask clients to provide us with two sets of keys for emergencies such as this.  The second set of keys along with the secondary pet walker assigned to your pet, should cover any emergency that may arise with your primary walker.

What forms of payment do you accept? How does billing work?

We accept cash, checks, and credit card payments (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover).

Do I need to sign a contract?

Yes.  The contract states permission to enter your home to care for your animals and that you agree to our policies and procedures.  The contract does not state that you must use our services for any allotted amount of time.  You may start and end our services at your discretion, but we do require a 24 hour notice of any cancelled service dates.

Once I'm a client, how far in advance do I need to book visits?

It depends on the kind of services that you would like to reserve.  For pet sitting, we start booking about a month in advance.  Our holiday schedule, in particular, tends to fill up fast, so the more notice the better.  Full-time clients have first priority in reservations, when possible.  We ask for a minimum of three to four days notice for dog walking, but, once again, the more advance notice you can give us, the better.

What is your cancellation policy?

Dog walks and non-holiday pet sitting will be credited if cancelled with a minimum of 24 hours notice.  Cancelations without 24 hour notice will not be credited or refunded.  During the holiday season, we require at least 5 days cancellation or you will be charged for the entire schedule of visits booked.

Are there extra costs for holiday visits?

No!

What type of animals do you care for?  What if you don't have any experience caring for my type of pet?

Although a majority of our clients are dogs and cats, we do have clients with other types of small animals, birds, and reptiles that we care for as well.

Can you give medicine to pets?

Our pet sitters have experience giving injections, oral pills and liquids, as well as applying ointments.

My dog has been aggressive in the past. Can we still be a client?

This depends on your dog.  If your dog walker gets along well with your pet and can control him or her during walks, then we see no reason why services can’t continue.  However, if there's danger of physical harm to the walker or another person or animal, then, unfortunately, we're unable to care for your dog.

Does my dog need to be licensed?

In New York City all pet owners are required to have a license for their dog.  We ask our clients to comply.

I still have additional questions.
